Write or Radiate?

چکیده
We consider information flow via physical transport of inscribed media through space and compare it to information flow via electromagnetic radiation. Somewhat counterintuitively for point to point links, physical transport of inscribed mass is often energetically more efficient by many orders of magnitude than electromagnetic broadcast. And perhaps more surprising, even in a broadcast setting (depending on the receiver density) inscribed mass transport is still energetically more efficient. We examine these results for terrestrial telecommunications as well as point to point and broadcast communication over great distances with loose delay constraints.

متن کاملThe Comparative Effect of Reading-to-Write and Writing-Only Tasks on the Improvement of EFL Learners’ Writing Ability
The ability to write effectively is becoming progressively important and instruction in writing is assuming an increasing role in second and foreign language education. Students’ writing abilities have been tested through various writing tasks. Independent tasks of writing or writing-only tasks have been utilized to test students’ writing ability; however, they have been criticized for their la...
متن کاملGlycine immunoreactivity of multipolar neurons in the ventral cochlear nucleus which project to the dorsal cochlear nucleus.
Certain distinct populations of neurons in the dorsal cochlear nucleus are inhibited by a neural source that is responsive to a wide range of acoustic frequencies. In this study, we examined the glycine immunoreactivity of two types of ventral cochlear nucleus neurons (planar and radiate) in the rat which project to the dorsal cochlear nucleus (DCN) and thus, might be responsible for this inhib...
متن کاملRadiate and Planar Multipolar Neurons of the Mouse Anteroventral Cochlear Nucleus: Intrinsic Excitability and Characterization of their Auditory Nerve Input
Radiate and planar neurons are the two major types of multipolar neurons in the ventral cochlear nucleus (VCN). Both cell types receive monosynaptic excitatory synaptic inputs from the auditory nerve, but have different responses to sound and project to different target regions and cells. Although the intrinsic physiology and synaptic inputs to planar neurons have been previously characterized,...
متن کاملIntroduction to Ultra-wideband Antennas
In addition, a UWB antenna is preferentially nondispersive, having a fixed phase center. If waveform dispersion occurs in a predictable fashion it may be possible to compensate for it, but in general it is desirable to radiate similar waveforms in all directions. A logperiodic antenna is an example of a dispersive antenna. Larger scale components radiate low frequency components while smaller s...
